What is your Human Motivation?

When I ask people to participate, not many people would want to.

But if I will to say, anybody who participates in the game or questions will have $50. Immediately, everyone starts to wake up, because there is a strong and interesting motivation.

Human beings behave the same. If they are not motivated, they will not participate and not cooperate with you. However, if both of you are having the same goal. Then you will see the motivation spikes up. The atmosphere starts to change.

Take for another example, a salesperson. The sales person is only keen to make sales in order to sustain his/her position in the company.  He/she is not keen in your internal affairs. Where there is opportunity to make sales, he/she will be there. Thus if you are interested to buy products/services from a salesperson, his/her service to you will be fantastic. He/she will give you all the information that you need so that it gives you the ease to buy service/products from him/her. Of course some salespeople will be-friend with you so that you can refer more deals to him/her.

Lessons Learned: Different people will have various interests / motivation to obtain certain objectives. Some interest is to sustain their employment position while some interest is to gain more power in the company. Whatever the motivation is, let’s achieve it.

How to apply as Project Manager in your industry?

Recently, I received many requests seeking me to share with them how do novices or those who are mid-life career changed get into Project Management industry?

Well, to manage professional or Corporate projects well, you have to start manage personal projects, such as for those profit or non-profit organizations.

Firstly, you need to understand the concept of project management. Get the main gist of project management, and then start to manage projects.

Next, you have to network with other project managers in your desired industry so that the knowledge can be shared or you can be tagged onto others experience.

If you are working into a paper qualification conscious working environment, you need to get yourself a certificate in Project Management. Be it from Project Management Institute, Prince2 or Certificate in IT Project Management (CITPM), it is crucial to get yourself certified. For some organizations, with relevant project management certificate and experience, you are then qualified to knock on their employment door.

Some of these organizations feel that you need to have the fundamental Project Management knowledge, instead of them to invest time to train a fresh school-leaver. Thus you can start to gain hands-on experience by managing some personal projects such as picnic, outings, house renovation, friend’s wedding and so forth. All this will gives you a

There is no doubt of the intense knowledge of terminology, concept used in the formal education. However, not many organizations are following the same terminology either. However, the process is flexible and needs to adjust to every organization. For example, some organizations that I knew, they don’t use the project charter. They will use the project request to represent charter.

In my opinion, terminology variation is alright so long everyone in the Project Management Office is aware of what the document is referring to.

Lesson Learned:

#1- Understand the basic PM concepts

#2- Use the PM knowledge and start to manage many non-profit projects (such as picnic, outing, classmate gathering and so forth)

#3- To gain the precious knowledge, like project costing, project scheduling, project scoping etc

#4- the most important factor – Once you are managing some Corporate projects, start to create a project checklist template. I have created the template and it eases my project management effort. If you are keen, click here to get it.

Lesson Learned in Interviewing Candidates

I happened to interview some candidates for the position of a Project Coordinator.

There were 2 unique candidates in this interview session.

Both of the candidates resigned their previous job without securing a new position.
Thus their notice period is immediately available.

Candidate 1
She is a young lady of 26 years old. We had arranged for a 10am morning interview session.

While the interview panel (including myself) is waiting anxiously at the meeting room.
The candidate called and said that she will be few minutes late for the interview.

However, she took more than 20 minutes to arrive the meeting room.
The first impression was already discounted. Her punctuality had gave her away.
Out of grace, maybe she was caught in the traffic.

Thus we started the interview.
The moment we sat down, the candidate immediately took out a piece of paper from her handbag.
It seems like she is trying to read from her prepared script and not stating the true fact.
Each time a question was given to her, she seems to be looking onto that piece of paper for inspiration.

Being a NLP trained, I looked at her eyes while she speaks.
Her eye contact was floating and she had been moving her eyes all over the place. Looking upwards, sideways and downwards.  It gave me the impression that she is making up facts and trying to say somethings to please the interview panel.

After the whole interview session, the panel evaluated and feedback that she is not ready for the position.

Candidate 2

After the last incident in the morning, the interview panel had started to be more watchful.
The next candidate had overcome the impression of punctuality

Panel discovered that she had started her career for the last 10 years in the same company, from a entry level admin clerk till the position of HR Admin Manager.
She had given the panel the impression that she knows what she is doing and she presented herself well.

Not having discussed further, the panel cut short the session.

Comparing the 2 interview candidates performance.
The panel had decided to shortlist the second candidate and offer her the position.

Lessons Learned:

  • First impression really last if both parties are meeting for the first time.
  • Know what you are saying and be confident of yourself.
  • Do not be late for any important meeting
